Somewhere, along the lines, we (everyone) got sensitive. We started giving trophies for last place. People forgot how to take criticism. We started (and continue) to want to spare people from the realities of what it really takes. Close counts. Thanks for trying. Better luck next time—even worse—Fail Harder.

Industry-wise, we covet the idea. Not its realization, it’s viability.

If they don’t need you, it’s okay. You do not live for other people.

It is not the diamonds or the birds, the people or the potatoes; it is not any of the nouns. The miracle is the adverbs, the way things are done. It is the way love gets done despite every catastrophe.

I think it would be nice to be able to wear extravagant hats, and gloves, and all these extravagant clothes and not be on the street and not be mocked for it or questioned why… If you wear a fantastic hat during the day in the street people say ‘where are you going? why are you dressed like that?’ and it’s maybe the most annoying question in the world. Why do we have to have a reason to dress up or to be glamorous or to have fun? Why do we have to have a reason for it? I hate it when people ask me why. Why not?

Nothing can wear you out like caring about people.

When it comes to being gentle, start with yourself. Don’t get upsest with your imperfections. Being disappointed by failure is understandable, but it shouldn’t turn into bitterness or spite directed at yourself. It’s a great mistake because it leads nowhere—to get angry because you are angry; upset at being upset; disappointed because you are disappointed.
